Death Marches of 1945 - A photographic Project

January 1945: the Red Army is conquering land, the Nazi fear the enemy and give the order to evacuate the concentration camps in the Polish city of Oświęcim (Auschwitz) while destroying the evidence of mass killings.

On January 18th, 1945 an estimated 60.000 cadaverous men, women and children, mostly Jews,  are forced out of Auschwitz's camps on endless marches in the harsh Polish winter.

Today, silent places hold the truth of this horror and monuments scattered along the routes of the marches standing in remembrance of these countless lost souls.

On January 18th 2014, this project follows the steps the prisoners walked 69 years earlier in commemoration of the victims of the Holocaust.

The project’s focus is the 70 km march from Oświęcim to Wodzisław Śląski. It documents the route of the march, recording the monuments and memorials that stand along the way.

The creative process and development of this project began in Fall 2013. It was partially financed through the Santander Mobility Scholarship awarded by Edinburgh Napier Univeristy after the presentation of the work's proposal.

The shooting for the project began on January, 2014.

The final series of images was exhibited in Edinburgh in May and London in June 2014.
